Choosing Your Board

What is a Whirly Board?

A Whirly Board is a multidirectional balance trainer designed to spin, tilt, move, and respond in every direction. Unlike rocker boards that move primarily along one axis or Indo-style boards that roll from side to side, Whirly Board uses our Triple Half-Sphere Technology™—three independent balance points beneath a maple deck. This gives you multiple points to balance, spin, and move on.

Use the center ball to practice rotations and full-body balance, or shift onto the end balls to work on weight transfer and even “walk” the board across the room. From beginner movements to advanced board-sport tricks, Whirly Board creates more ways to train balance, coordination, rotational control, and stability.

The Whirly Complete adds our patent-pending MagLock3™ removable center ball and a progressive system designed to meet you at every stage of your balance journey.

Which board is right for me?

The best Whirly Board depends on how you want to use it:

Whirly Complete: Best for beginners, families, fitness, healthy aging, physical therapy and anyone who wants a progressive training system. Its interchangeable components let you begin with greater stability and increase the difficulty as your balance improves. The advanced Roller level is also ideal for surfers and anyone ready for a more dynamic challenge. If you’re recovering from an injury or working with balance limitations, choose your starting level with guidance from your physical therapist or healthcare provider.

Whirly Desk Rider: Best for standing desks, larger feet and longer balance sessions. Its wider deck provides a more comfortable stance while still allowing multidirectional movement. It’s also a great option for adults who want more room underfoot for everyday balance training.

Whirly Sport 360°: Best for board-sport training, spins, tricks and agility. Its skateboard-style shape creates a more athletic stance for snowboarding, skateboarding, skiing, wakeboarding and other sports that require quick reactions and rotational control.

Still unsure? Our quick board finder will point you toward the best board, components and starting level for your goals and experience.

What is the weight limit for a Whirly Board?

Maximum user weight depends on the board:

  • Desk Rider: 400 pounds
  • Sport 360°: 350 pounds
  • Whirly Complete: 400 pounds (350 pounds on the green MagLock3™ ball)
What are the dimensions and specifications of each Whirly Board?

All measurements are approximate. Overall height is measured from the floor to the top of the deck when the board is level and does not include the additional clearance needed while tilting.

What grip surface should I choose?

The best grip surface depends on how you plan to use your Whirly Board:

  • Cork: Our most versatile option for fitness, family use, and everyday balance training. It provides comfortable traction with a little extra cushioning and feels better beneath your hands during exercises such as push-ups and planks. It can be used barefoot, with socks, or with shoes.
  • Skateboard grip tape: Best for board-sport training, bigger spins and tricks where maximum traction is important. The surface is abrasive, so it should always be used with shoes.
  • CloudGrip EVA foam: Best for anyone who wants additional cushioning beneath their feet. It provides a softer surface for standing-desk use, longer sessions, and lower-impact balance training. Best used in shoes or bare feet.

Grip options vary by board and configuration, so check the product page to see which surfaces are available for your preferred model.

Which Whirly Complete level should I start with?

Whirly Complete is designed to help you move through all five levels as your balance and confidence improve. The real question is where to begin.

  • Level 1 — Foundation Deck: The most stable starting point, and it can be used on its own for gentle rocking, or each component can be used with it. It works well for physical therapy exercises, toddlers and young children, older adults who have experienced significant loss of balance, and anyone rebuilding basic stability. It’s also useful for agility footwork, weight-transfer drills, and learning to “walk” the board around the room. Children should be supervised, and anyone using it for rehabilitation or significant balance limitations should follow their healthcare provider’s guidance.
  • Level 2 — SoftStart Cushion: Adds adjustable, low-to-the-ground instability. Use less air for a gentler wobble, or inflate it more for a firmer, intermediate balance challenge.
  • Level 3 — Green MagLock3™ Ball: The MagLock3™ ball has 4 magnets that lock into place on the foundation deck and delivers the classic multidirectional Whirly experience with 360° tilting and spinning. Confident movers may begin here, while newer users can progress to it once they feel comfortable at Levels 1 and 2.
  • Level 4 — Hard Whirly Black Ball: Creates faster reactions and a greater challenge when Level 3 begins to feel easy. You must purchase the green MagLock3™ ball to use this with the hard black whirly ball. It fits tightly over the green easier ball and does not include magnets. If you just want to use this component, we suggest purchasing a Sport 360˚ or Desk Rider, both of which have a fixed ball.
  • Level 5 — Roller: Adds advanced side-to-side movement for surfers, board-sport athletes, and anyone ready to challenge their balance in a completely different way.

When in doubt, begin with more stability and progress when you feel ready. Every level trains something different, so the earlier levels remain useful even after you advance.

Can I order a custom Whirly Board as a birthday or special occasion gift?

Yes! A handcrafted board with a custom design is a gift they'll never forget—perfect for birthdays, graduations, retirements, or any milestone worth celebrating.

Here's how it works:

Upload your own design — Send us your graphic, and we'll fit it to the board and email you a proof for approval. This is included in the cost of your board.

Let us design it for you — Want a name, special date, or a unique piece of art? Our team will create it for a $50 design fee and send you a proof before we print.

Once you approve the design, your custom board ships in about 7 business days.

One note: we can't print copyrighted or trademarked artwork, such as Disney or Pokémon characters, unless you own the rights. Generic themes—like university colors for a graduation gift—work great.

Ready to create something one-of-a-kind? Email us at support@whirlyboard.com, and we'll get started.

Where can I try a Whirly Board before purchasing?

We have a growing number of dealer-demo locations where you can try a Whirly Board, compare models, and find the right fit before purchasing. Visit our Dealer Demo page and enter your ZIP code into the live map to find a participating shop near you.

If the shop signs up through your referral, you can earn a referral commission or a discount toward your own Whirly Board. Participating shops receive special demo-board pricing and can contact us directly for program details.

Helping customers try before they buy is part of our sustainability effort. A better initial fit can mean fewer unnecessary shipments, exchanges and returns.

Getting Started & Safety

Do I need prior balance-board experience?

No. You don’t need any previous balance-board experience to use a Whirly Board. Balance is a skill, and like any skill, it improves with practice. Start near a sturdy counter, wall or railing, use support as needed, and begin with small, controlled movements.

You may suck at it at first—and that’s okay! Whirly Boards are intentionally challenging because they move in multiple directions. That challenge gives you room to keep developing your balance, coordination, agility, and reaction time, rather than quickly outgrowing your board. Practice consistently for 30 days, and we believe you’ll be amazed by how far you’ve come.

If you prefer a more gradual introduction, the Whirly Complete offers five progressive levels. You can begin with greater stability and add more movement as your balance and confidence improve. Instead of being limited to one difficulty level, the Whirly Complete grows with you—all the way to the full Whirly experience.

Is a live class included with my Whirly Board?

Yes! Every board or bundle includes one free Getting Started class with Whirly Board founders Joanna or Erik.

Choose the class that matches your board:

  • Getting Started with Your Whirly Board for the Sport 360° or Desk Rider

  • Getting Started with Whirly Complete for the Whirly Complete system

We’ll show you how to get started safely, help you find the right level of challenge and answer your questions in real time. Additional standing-desk and fitness classes are also available for anyone who wants to keep moving and progressing.

What is the Stabilizer Ring used for?

The Stabilizer Ring is a removable training aid that sits around the center ball to help keep the board from sliding too far during certain movements. It does not hold the board flat—it still allows you to balance and shift your weight—but it creates a more controlled training area.

The ring is especially helpful during exercises that place your weight off-center, including single-leg movements, lunges, squats and exercises using weights. It can also provide extra confidence while you become comfortable with a more challenging center ball.

Remove the Stabilizer Ring when you want the board’s full range of movement for free balancing, spins and agility training.

Do I need a mat under my Whirly Board?

It depends on which Whirly Board or Whirly Complete component you’re using—and what movement you plan to practice.

  • Whirly Complete Foundation Deck: Light balancing and controlled “walking” can be practiced on a clean, dry hard surface. For better grip and performance when spinning or pivoting on the end balls, use a thin carpet or a Whirly recycled-rubber mat.
  • SoftStart Cushion: A mat is not required. The cushion provides its own grip and can be used on a clean, dry hard floor.
  • Green MagLock3™ Ball: A mat is generally not required. Its grippy TPU material provides traction on hard surfaces.
  • Hard Whirly Black Ball: Use a thin carpet or a Whirly rubber mat. The hard plastic can slip on wood, tile, and other smooth flooring and may scratch the surface.
  • Level 5 Roller: Begin on thin carpet or a Whirly rubber mat. The additional resistance makes the Roller easier to control while learning.
  • Whirly Sport 360° and Desk Rider: Always use a thin carpet or a Whirly recycled-rubber mat. Their hard plastic center balls can slip on smooth flooring and may scratch or damage the surface.

Always use your board on a clean, dry surface with open space around you. Avoid loose rugs or anything that could slide beneath the board.

Shop recycled Whirly mats

Can a Whirly Board mark my floor or carpet?

The end balls can leave scuff marks on finished hard floors—similar to marks from gym shoes—especially when practicing big spins or tricks. These marks can usually be buffed off, but we recommend using a Whirly recycled-rubber mat to protect hardwood, tile, vinyl, and laminate.

On carpet, use the board directly on firm, low-pile carpet or carpet tile. Aggressive spinning may create friction marks on some softer or inexpensive carpets.

Do not place the Whirly rubber mat over carpet. The rubber can rub against and damage carpet fibers. Whirly mats are designed for hard flooring only.

Protect Your Floors With a Whirly Mat

How do I get started safely?

Set up your board on its recommended surface with plenty of open space around you. Keep a sturdy desk, counter, railing, or wall within easy reach. A trusted person’s hands can provide moral support, and walking poles with floor-safe blunt tips are another option.

Whirly Sport 360° and Whirly Wide Desk Rider

Begin with the board tilted so that one end-ball rests on the floor. Place your first foot directly over that end ball. While holding your support, place your second foot over the opposite end of the ball.

Slowly shift your weight toward the center until you find your balance. Begin with small, controlled movements from side to side and front to back. As your control improves, add 180's, single-leg balances, and spins.

Whirly Complete

  • Level 1 — Foundation Deck: Place your feet over the two end balls. Practice gentle weight shifts, footwork, and “walking” the board around the room.
  • Level 2 — SoftStart Cushion: Use less air for a gentler wobble or add more air for a firmer, more responsive challenge. Begin with small movements in every direction.
  • Level 3 — MagLock3™ Ball: Step on using the same end-ball method described above. Start with controlled tilts and circles before progressing to rotations and spins.
  • Level 4 — Hard Whirly Black Ball: Use the same stepping method, but expect quicker movement and faster reactions. Keep your support nearby until you adjust to the increased challenge.
  • Level 5 — Roller: Begin on a thin carpet or a Whirly rubber mat with support nearby. Center the Roller beneath the deck and practice small side-to-side movements before attempting larger movements or board-sport exercises.

Step off and rest whenever you feel fatigued or out of control. Children should be supervised, and anyone recovering from an injury or experiencing significant balance limitations should follow guidance from a healthcare professional.

What if my Whirly Board feels too difficult?

Start with your free live beginner class, included with every Whirly Board purchase. We’ll help you choose the right setup, show you how to get on and off safely, and answer your questions in real time.

Most importantly: don’t give up! The Whirly Board was designed to challenge you—and yes, humble you a little. If it feels difficult at first, that doesn’t mean you are bad at it. It simply shows that your balance has room to improve.

Practice beside a sturdy counter, railing, or wall and begin with small, controlled weight shifts before attempting spins or tricks. If you have a Whirly Complete, return to a gentler setup such as the Foundation Deck or SoftStart Cushion. You can also remove a little air from the cushion to make it softer and more stable.

We recommend practicing for a few minutes every day for 30 days. Don’t be afraid to really use your board —enjoy it or put a few scratches on it—that means you’re learning.

We are confident that if you give it your best effort, your balance will improve. And if you still don’t love it after 30 days, contact us within one week, and we’ll give you a full refund with free returns (contiguous US).

How do I clean and care for my Whirly Board?

Wipe the cork surface with mild soap and water using a cloth, sponge or soft-bristled brush. Avoid soaking the board, and allow it to air-dry completely before using it again.

For skateboard grip tape, use a soft brush to remove dirt and debris. Use as little water as possible and avoid saturating the wood.

Light scratches on the center ball are normal and won’t affect performance. They can often be remedied with a clean, soft cloth and a light application of coconut oil. If you have a soft-cloth woodworking buffer, it can also work well to buff out deeper scratches.

If the cork begins lifting, do not continue pulling it away from the board. Send us a photo, and we’ll help you with repair guidance or replacement material.

Standing Desk

Which Whirly Board is best for a standing desk?

The best choice depends on how you want to use your board during the workday.

Sport 360° — best for active balance breaks

Our original Whirly Board became popular with skaters and board-sport enthusiasts who suddenly found themselves stuck behind a desk. It has a sporty, responsive feel that’s great for spinning, stretching, and taking short movement breaks. Choose it if you want something fun to mess around on between work sessions rather than a platform for standing all day.

Desk Rider — best for longer standing sessions

As the Whirly Board became popular in the standing-desk market, customers asked for more room and comfort during extended use. We created the Desk Rider with a wider deck that’s more comfortable for larger feet, changing your stance, and spending longer periods at your desk.

Whirly Complete — best for variety and all-day versatility

The Whirly Complete lets you adjust how your board feels throughout the day. Use the SoftStart Cushion for gentle movement during focused writing or thinking, switch to the green MagLock3™ ball during meetings, and use the black Whirly Ball for a more active balance break. If you’re working from home and have enough space, the Roller adds an entirely different challenge.

Whirly Board co-founder Joanna currently prefers the Whirly Complete because she can match the setup to the type of work she’s doing—but all three boards can make a standing desk much more fun and healthy.

Get a standing desk board

Can I actually work while standing on a Whirly Board?

Yes. You don’t need to keep the board perfectly level or balanced continuously in the center. The goal at a standing desk is to keep changing positions and gently shifting your weight—including resting the board on one end ball and then shifting to the other.

There are four ways to use your Whirly Board during the workday:

Deep-focus work

During writing, planning, or other tasks that require your full attention, keep the movement subtle. Shift your weight between the end balls, change your stance, or use the Whirly Complete SoftStart Cushion for gentle movement that doesn’t require much concentration.

Meetings and phone calls

When a task requires less focus, add more active rocking, tilting, and multidirectional movement. Calls and virtual meetings are great opportunities to move more freely while you listen and talk.

Two-minute movement breaks

Every hour or two, move your board away from the desk into an open area and spend about two minutes actively moving your body. Practice larger weight shifts, spins, squats, stretches, or other movements that match your ability level.

An active footrest while sitting

Slide your Whirly Board under the desk and use it as an active footrest. Rock it between the end balls, move your ankles, or slightly elevate your feet instead of leaving them planted in one position. This keeps your lower body moving and can support healthy circulation while you sit.

Alternate between sitting and standing throughout the day. Your Whirly Board can keep you moving in both positions—even when work has you glued to the screen.

How long and how often should I use my Whirly Board during the workday?

Start with 10–20 minutes at a time while your feet, ankles, and stabilizing muscles adjust. As balancing becomes more natural, gradually extend your standing sessions as you feel comfortable.

The goal isn’t to stay on the board—or stand—all day. Alternate between:

  • Standing and gently shifting your weight on the board
  • Sitting with the board under your desk as an active footrest
  • Standing on the floor
  • Taking short, more active movement breaks away from your desk

Every hour or two, try taking a two-minute movement break. Tilt the board onto an end ball to create an angled surface for a deep calf stretch, practice larger weight shifts, add squats, or work on single-leg balance. Keep a desk, wall, or other sturdy support nearby when practicing one-legged movements.

If your feet or legs become tired, change positions. Consistent movement throughout the day matters more than completing one long balancing session.

How should I set up my standing desk to use with a Whirly Board?

Set up your workstation while standing on the Whirly Board and the component you plan to use most often. Your board raises you approximately 2¾–4¾ inches, so your desk and monitor will likely need to be higher than they are when you stand directly on the floor.

Check these four areas:

  • Desk and keyboard: Raise the desk until your shoulders feel relaxed and your elbows are close to your body at approximately 90–100 °.
  • Wrists: Keep your wrists straight and in line with your forearms while typing.
  • Monitor: Position the monitor directly in front of you with the top of the screen at or slightly below eye level.
  • Viewing distance: Place the screen approximately 18–30 inches away—usually about an arm’s length.

Your mouse should be close to the keyboard so you don’t have to reach. If you switch between sitting, standing on the floor, and using different Whirly Complete components, an adjustable desk and monitor arm make it much easier to reposition your setup.

Ergonomics isn’t about holding one “perfect” posture all day. A good setup should make it easy to change positions, shift your weight, and move comfortably.

Balance & Healthy Aging

What is proprioception, and why does it matter as we age?

Proprioception is your body's sense of where it is in space—it's how you can close your eyes and still touch your nose, or step off a curb without looking at your feet. Tiny sensors in your muscles, joints, and skin constantly send position updates to your brain, which uses them to keep you steady and coordinated.

Like muscle strength, proprioception fades if you don't use it. As we age, those signals slow and become less precise, which is a major reason why reaction time, stability, and confidence on your feet can decline over the years. The good news is that proprioception is trainable at any age.

That's exactly what a Whirly Board does. Because it spins and tilts in every direction, your body can't go on autopilot—your feet, ankles, hips, and core have to constantly sense, adjust, and react. Every minute on the board is a workout for the connection between your brain and body, not just your muscles.

Even a few minutes a day makes a difference. Start at a level that feels stable—like the Foundation Deck with our soft start cushion on the Whirly Complete—and progress as your body relearns to listen. Sharper proprioception means better balance, quicker reactions, and more confidence in everything you do on your feet.

Can Whirly Board help improve balance and agility as I age?

Whirly Board is more than a balance board—it’s balance in motion. The goal isn’t simply to hold the board perfectly flat. Tilting, shifting, spinning, and moving between positions challenge your body to continually adjust to changes beneath your feet.

Balance helps you stay steady. Agility helps you react when staying steady is no longer possible. If you unexpectedly step onto a slippery floor or icy parking lot, you may need to shift your weight, reposition your feet, and respond quickly. Whirly Board can help develop the balance, coordination, footwork, and body awareness used during those unexpected moments.

The Whirly Board itself is currently being researched as a potential tool for fall prevention. No product can guarantee that someone won’t fall. Research on step training and reactive balance

Whirly Board is also designed to make movement part of everyday life—at your standing desk, during a workout, while training for a sport, or simply while having fun. It isn’t just another piece of fitness equipment you have to remember to use. It’s a tool for building a more active, balanced lifestyle.

Which Whirly Board is best for older adults or people with reduced balance?

Add the answer here. Keep it clear, specific and easy to scan.

Which Whirly Complete level is right for where I am in my balance journey?

Your age doesn’t determine your starting level—your current balance, confidence and history do. Use this as a general starting guide, not a medical assessment.

Start with Level 1: Foundation Deck if you:

  • Cannot balance on one foot for about three seconds without grabbing support
  • Have fallen before or are afraid of falling
  • Need assistance when stepping onto an unstable surface
  • Want to begin with basic weight shifts, foot placement, and walking exercises without a center component

Practice beside a sturdy counter or railing with appropriate supervision. If you have fallen recently or are at high risk of falling, speak with your physician or physical therapist before beginning.

Start with Level 2: SoftStart Cushion if you:

  • Have noticed your balance beginning to decline
  • Can stand and walk independently, but want a gentler introduction to balance training
  • Want an adjustable challenge that can change as you improve

Begin with less air in the cushion for a softer, more stable feel. Add air as your control and confidence improve.

Start with Level 3: Green MagLock3™ Ball if you:

  • Currently have good balance and want to maintain or strengthen it
  • Can balance on one foot comfortably
  • Feel confident shifting your weight in every direction
  • Want the full 360° Whirly Board experience with a grippier, more forgiving center ball

The black Whirly Ball and Roller provide advanced challenges when you’re ready to progress further. You can purchase additional components separately.

How can Whirly Board help with changes in balance during perimenopause?

Some women notice changes in strength, stability, or coordination during perimenopause, and Whirly Board is here to help combat those symptoms and help provide relief.

Balance training gives your brain and body repeated practice working together. Because a Whirly Board moves in every direction, it trains you to shift your weight and react when you move off-center—the same skills that protect you in everyday life. Review the research

For perimenopausal and menopausal women, we recommend the Whirly Complete. Start on the stable Level 1 Foundation Deck, then add the Level 2 SoftStart Cushion, Level 3 MagLock3 ball, and beyond—only when you feel ready. Choose the level that matches your ability today, and upgrade as your balance improves.

If you experience sudden dizziness, new or worsening unsteadiness, or a fall, speak with a healthcare professional to rule out other causes.

Fitness & Workouts

Is Whirly Board a full-body workout, and what muscles does it work?

Workout smarter- not harder with a whirly board. You wouldn't skip leg day, so don't skip balance day at the gym!

Simply balancing on a Whirly Board engages the feet, ankles, calves, legs, hips, and deep core muscles that continually stabilize your body as the board moves.

It becomes a full-body workout when you add exercises such as squats, lunges, planks, push-ups, rotations, and upper-body strength movements. Because the surface moves in every direction, your core works to stabilize you even during exercises that normally target another area of the body.

Gentle balancing can provide light, continuous muscle engagement, while dedicated exercises and added weights can create a much more challenging workout.

What exercises can I do on a Whirly Board?

Whirly Board can be used for much more than standing and spinning. With the help of our stabilizer ring, you can practice any movement and prevent the board from slipping beneath you. Our Exercise Library includes movements organized by category:

  • Core exercises
  • General balance exercises
  • Lunges
  • Mobility and stretching
  • Squats
  • Upper-body exercises

Many exercises begin with body weight and can be made more challenging by adding dumbbells. Build control with little or no weight first, then gradually increase the resistance as your balance and form improve.

We’re also developing resistance-band exercises and new demonstration videos.

How can I make a Whirly Board workout easier or harder?

To make an exercise easier, use a gentler Whirly Complete component, widen your stance, practice beside sturdy support, and begin with body weight or lighter weights.

The Stabilizer Ring is important for exercises where your weight may not remain centered—particularly single-leg movements. It helps keep the board from sliding out of position so you can focus on the exercise. Some movements should not be attempted without it.

To increase the challenge, progress to a more difficult Whirly Complete component, narrow your stance, add controlled single-leg movements, or gradually increase the weight. Master the movement without added weight before making it harder.

Board Sports & Agility

Which Whirly Board is best for my sport?

Whirly Board trains more than static balance. Its multidirectional movement challenges athletes to shift their weight, react quickly, rotate, and recover—making it a unique agility trainer for board sports and other movement-based activities.

Sport 360°: Spins, agility, and board control

The Sport 360° has a responsive, skateboard-style stance that’s excellent for agility drills, quick directional changes, and big spins. It’s our top choice for all sports athletes, skateboarders, snowboarders, and athletes who want to work on rotation and dynamic board control.

Whirly Complete Level 5: Surf and wakesurf training

Level 5 includes the Roller for practicing a surf-style balance challenge, along with every component below it. Use the Roller for weight shifts, stance, and board control, then switch to the black Whirly Ball to work on rotation mechanics and prepare for 360° attempts behind the boat or in the ocean.

Whirly Wide Desk Rider with Teton cork surface: Hockey drills

The Desk Rider’s wider stance and durable cork-rubber Teton surface work well for dryland hockey training. Use it for lateral weight shifts, stickhandling drills, single-leg control, and other exercises that combine balance with fast reactions.

The best setup depends on your sport, but the goal remains the same: balance in motion. Whirly Board helps you practice responding and moving—not merely standing still.

How can I use Whirly Complete for agility and surf training?

Whirly Complete offers two very different ways to train movement and board control:

Foundation Deck for agility training

Remove the center component and use the Foundation Deck for footwork, quick step-ons and step-offs, walking across the room with the end balls, controlled weight shifts, and nose-and-tail spins. Without a center ball, you can focus on speed, coordination, and foot placement while keeping the challenge closer to the floor.

Level 5 Roller for surf training

Place the solid-cork Roller below the deck and begin beside a sturdy support on firm, low-pile carpet or a Whirly mat. Start with slow side-to-side weight shifts and work toward keeping the deck controlled without touching down.

As your control improves, add surf-style stance changes, squats, reaches, and rotational movements. Switch between the Roller and black Whirly Ball to train both rail-to-rail board control and 360° rotation mechanics.

How do I learn to spin 360˚s, and which Whirly Board should I use?

Begin with controlled heel-to-toe weight shifts before attempting a full rotation. Next, practice smaller nose-and-tail pivots by shifting your weight over one end ball and rotating the opposite end. Gradually build from quarter turns to half turns and then full 360° spins. Keep your stance shoulder-width apart over the end balls and look at the horizon. Push off from the bottom-end ball with all your weight, then turn in the opposite direction. Lead with your shoulders, and your body will follow.

With the Whirly Complete, begin on the green MagLock3™ ball. Its lower height and grippy TPU material create a more controlled introduction to multidirectional movement. Progress to the black Whirly Ball when you’re ready for quicker, more responsive rotations.

The Whirly Complete is excellent for learning spins and building confidence. For aggressive spinning, repeated rotations, and advanced tricks such as 720° and 1080° spins, we recommend the Sport 360°. Its hard center ball is permanently attached, making it our dedicated board for athletes who want to spin fast and go big.

Practice on firm, low-pile carpet or a Whirly recycled-rubber mat placed over hard flooring. Always clear plenty of open space before practicing larger spins.

Kids & Families

Is Whirly Board good for the whole family?

Yes! Whirly Board has something to offer nearly everyone in the family. The biggest problem may be deciding whose turn it is.

Take it from morning to night:

  • Use it during your morning stretching or workout.
  • Bring it to the office for standing-desk movement and balance breaks.
  • Let the kids wobble, spin, and play when they get home.
  • If screen time is inevitable—we all know it is—have them stand and move on the board while they game or watch.

Children can use it for active play and gross motor skills; adults can use it for fitness or desk movement; and athletes can practice agility, spins, and board control. Supervise younger children and choose a setup appropriate for each person’s ability.

One board, a full day of movement—and possibly a family argument over who gets it next.

What games can we play with a Whirly Board?

One of our favorite family games is WHIRL. We play it like HORSE:

  1. The first player performs a Whirly Board move or trick.
  2. The next player tries to repeat it.
  3. If they can’t complete it, they receive a letter.
  4. The first person to spell WHIRL is out—or declares an immediate rematch.

Start with simple challenges, such as timed challenges to avoid letting an end ball touch down, completing a controlled pivot, balancing in a particular stance, one-legged balancing, catching a ball or frisbee while balancing, or adding a degree of rotation. As everyone improves, progress to spins and more creative combinations.

Whirly Complete makes family play especially fun because the components can be changed for different ability levels, and keeps the competition more interesting! Keep challenges appropriate for the least-experienced player, supervise children, and give everyone plenty of open space.

Which Whirly Board is best for kids?

The Whirly Complete is our top recommendation for kids because it can grow with them from their earliest balance experiences through advanced spins and Roller challenges.

Very young children

Once a child is a steady walker, they can begin wobbling and shifting their weight on the Level 1 Foundation Deck with hands-on adult supervision. With no center component attached, it keeps them closer to the floor while they explore movement and practice gross-motor skills such as coordination, foot placement, and weight shifting.

Growing kids

As their confidence develops, children can progress to the SoftStart Cushion and green MagLock3™ ball. These levels introduce multidirectional movement and new challenges that can support the gross motor skills used in sports and active play.

Older kids and tweens

Older children often enjoy learning spins, tricks, and more advanced challenges. The Level 5 Roller is especially popular with tweens because it introduces a completely different surf-style balancing experience.

Kids who need more movement

For children with ADHD or higher movement needs, Whirly Complete can provide a controlled way to move while reading, listening, or doing schoolwork. Some children find that gentle movement helps them regulate their energy and remain engaged. The SoftStart Cushion can also be used as a wiggle seat as part of alternative seating options. Research on physical activity and dynamic seating suggests movement may support attention in some children with ADHD, although responses vary, and the Whirly Board is not an ADHD treatment. Learn more about research on physical activity and attention.

Always supervise younger children, provide open space, and begin with the component appropriate for their current ability.

Physical Therapy & Recovery

Can I use a Whirly Board after an injury or surgery?

Ask your physician or physical therapist before beginning. Every injury, surgery, and recovery plan is different, and your healthcare provider should determine when balance training is appropriate and which movements you should perform.

If you are approved to begin, start with the Whirly Complete component recommended by your provider, use sturdy support and progress gradually. Stop if you experience pain, dizziness or unexpected instability.

Whirly Board can be incorporated into a professional rehabilitation plan, but it is not a substitute for medical care or individualized physical therapy.

Which Whirly Board is best for physical therapy or rehabilitation?

We generally recommend the Whirly Complete because one progressive system can serve many of the same purposes as several separate balance-training tools.

Depending on the component and exercise, Whirly Complete can be used similarly to:

  • A slant board for calf stretching and ankle mobility
  • A low rocker or foundation board for foot placement and controlled weight shifts
  • An inflatable balance cushion or dome-style trainer
  • A multidirectional wobble board
  • A traditional roller board

This allows a physical therapist to change the difficulty and type of movement without switching between several pieces of equipment. A patient can begin on the Foundation Deck, progress to the SoftStart Cushion and green MagLock3™ ball, and eventually work toward the black Whirly Ball or Roller.

Customers have used Whirly Complete during recovery, and physical therapists have purchased it for progressive balance work in their clinics. The Sport 360° is more advanced and is generally better suited to experienced athletes returning to high-level training under professional guidance.

We’re also developing guided strengthening and mobility exercises with professional trainers. Condition-specific programs will be published only after appropriate clinical review.

Always use the Whirly Board as directed by your physician or physical therapist.
