I previously tried another brand of balance board and an "anti-fatigue" mat for my standing desk. I returned both of those other items because they didn't live up to the hype. The Whirly Board is waaaaay better and it rocks (and whirls)!
★★★★★Jordan G.Desk Rider owner
I've had a standing desk for over 10 years - well before it was cool. As such, I've tried every type of mat or invention to stand on. Well, nothing comes close to this board.
★★★★★Brandon B.Desk Rider owner
It satisfies my need to move while working and fidget during meeting that are going too long. I use it on and off during the day at my standing desk. I'm glad I went with the wider board.
★★★★★Dianna F.Desk Rider owner
I use it two to three hours per day at my standing desk and it is a huge upgrade over simply standing on a mat.
★★★★★Daniel S.Desk Rider owner
For now I've only used this at my standing desk, but I enjoy it so much, that having my desk in standing mode is my new default.
★★★★★James A.Desk Rider owner
Standing desks are the new craze at my office, everybody tries to one up everybody else with cool things for their desk. Well I won the war with my whirly board.
★★★★★Adam G.Desk Rider owner
The first 30 mins were pretty wobbly, but I adjusted quickly and now find a perfect "balance" where it's not so difficult that I can't stand comfortably and focus on my work, but tough enough that my body remains engaged.

Desk Rider FAQ

Before you
step on

Still have a question? We're a family business and we pick up the phone.

See all FAQs →

Is the Desk Rider right for my standing desk?

Yes, it's made for it. The wide 28″ × 10″ deck gives your feet room to change stance through a long day, including larger feet. It has one fixed Whirly ball, so you step on and go.

Want to start easier or change the feel through the day? Look at the Whirly Complete, which uses the same deck with five levels.

Can I actually work while standing on it?

Yes. You don't need to keep the board perfectly level or balanced in the center. The goal is to keep changing positions and gently shifting your weight, including resting the board on one end ball and then the other.

Keep the movement subtle for writing and deep-focus work, and move more freely on calls and in meetings.

How long should I stand on it?

Start with 10–20 minutes at a time while your feet, ankles and stabilizing muscles adjust, then extend as it feels comfortable.

The goal isn't to stay on the board, or stand, all day. Alternate between standing on the board, sitting with it under your desk as an active footrest, standing on the floor and short movement breaks. If your feet or legs get tired, change positions.

Can I use it sitting down?

Yes. Slide the board under your desk as an active footrest and keep your ankles moving. Add the Stabilizer Ring so it stays put while you sit.

Do I need a mat?

Yes on smooth floors. Use a thin carpet or a Whirly recycled-rubber mat. The Desk Rider's hard center ball can slip on smooth flooring and may scratch it.

Shop Whirly mats →

Will it work on carpet? Will it mark my floor?

On firm, low-pile carpet or carpet tile, use the board directly. Don't put the rubber mat over carpet; it's made for hard floors only.

On finished hard floors the end balls can leave scuff marks, similar to gym shoes. They can usually be buffed off, but we recommend a Whirly mat to protect hardwood, tile, vinyl and laminate.

How high should my desk be?

Set up your workstation while standing on the board. The Desk Rider is 4″ tall, so your desk and monitor will likely need to be higher than when you stand on the floor.

  • Raise the desk until your shoulders are relaxed and your elbows are at about 90–100°.
  • Keep your wrists straight while typing.
  • Put the top of the screen at or slightly below eye level, about an arm's length away.

Get the free desk setup workbook →

Is it hard to learn?

It's meant to challenge you a little. Keep a sturdy desk within reach, start with one end ball resting on the floor, step on and level out.

Every board comes with a free live Getting Started class, where we show you how to get on and off safely and find the right challenge.

Book your free class →

How much weight can it hold?

The Desk Rider is rated for users up to 400 lb.

What does science say about movement breaks?

Studies that break up long stretches of sitting with short bursts of activity have found better mood and energy, and better blood sugar after meals, than sitting straight through. Stepping away and moving helps your thinking too.

  • Ariga & Lleras, 2011: during a long task, attention steadily faded. Brief breaks from the task kept people focused.
  • Sio & Ormerod, 2009: a review of many studies found that setting a problem aside for a while helps people solve it. An easy activity in the gap sometimes helped more than resting.
  • Chang et al., 2025: a review of 383 studies found that a bout of exercise improves attention, executive function and memory right afterward.
  • Bergouignan et al., 2016: office workers who took 5-minute walking breaks every hour reported better mood, less fatigue, more energy and fewer food cravings by the end of the day.
  • Albulescu et al., 2022: a review of 22 studies found that short breaks boost energy and reduce fatigue. Effects on work performance were small and not consistent.
  • Gao et al., 2024: 3-minute walking or squatting breaks every 45 minutes improved blood sugar after meals in overweight young men, more than one 30-minute walk.
  • Gale et al., 2026: a review of 53 studies found that short activity breaks lowered blood sugar and insulin after meals. Walking breaks every 15–20 minutes had the biggest effect.
  • Duran et al., 2023: in 11 middle-aged and older adults, every break schedule tested lowered blood pressure, even 1 minute every hour.

Two minutes on your Whirly Board every hour is our practical recommendation for building more movement into your day. It isn't the exact schedule tested in these studies, and they didn't test balance boards.

Customers praised this balance board as "high quality" and "well made" for standing desks. It improves balance, core strength, and reduces back pain. Has a learning curve initially but becomes easier with practice. Some found it too challenging for typing while working. A few noted the concave shape can cause foot discomfort during extended use.

  • I'm already noticing a difference in my balance and core. It's also fun!
  • Well made. You can feel the passion in the quality build.
  • Perfect for stand-up desk. My back ache is gone. Highly recommend!

Where have you been all my life...

I love this thing. I had enjoyed my stand up desk for about a year, but for around 6 months I had begun randomly marching in place or using my chair to put a foot or knee on. My floor is concrete and standing in place not moving for hours was making my back ache... so I started looking at floor mats and cushions and randomly I happened on the Whirlyboard. Yes. Perfect. Gimme. Done. If you are needing something to keep you moving at a stand-up desk, this thing is awesome. Highly recommend! No it isn't difficult to balance. No you won't fall down. It's as challenging as you want to make it. And yes, I work continuously while wiggling around on it. 😆

Came used not new

I received a used board that already had wear damage on the center ball. I bought the cork and rubber grip as it said socks could be used with it. That is not true. You will slide and roll up your socks under your feet. I’m standing on it as I write this review. It’s been maybe 10mins and I’m already dripping in sweat and keep being thrown off it. But I have very weak ankle muscle and loose joints. Got this for the exercise and to hopefully transition to a longboard cruiser.Update: it’s disorienting to use due to its crazy instability. I personally have Vergil issues and this seemed to trigger it.

Best Balance Board for Standing Desks and Skate Training!

I’ve been using a wobble style balance board since earlier this year after switching my office setup to a standing desk, and nothing I’ve tried compares to the quality and feel of the Whirly Board.I grabbed one directly from their site and was blown away, not just by the board itself but also the customer service. It’s a family-owned business out of Wisconsin and you can tell they care. That alone made me want to leave a review here too.The build is top notch: 8-ply maple just like my skate decks, and it feels solid underfoot. I got the wide version and I’m glad I did. It matches the width of my skateboard perfectly, which makes it great for getting my balance back before hitting the streets again.Bottom line: if you're even thinking about adding a balance board to your standing desk setup or want a solid tool for core strength and board sport training, grab this one. The value is unreal compared to other boards I’ve seen at higher prices with way less quality.

Can't wait for breaks in work to stand up on it!

It's unbelievably hard at first. But after a short while I got much better at it. You can't really expect to type while standing on it or anything like that

The best choice for standing desks!

I stand at my desk a solid 6+ hours a day on average. I bought the original Whirly Board, which I liked, but standing for hours with no shoes, not the best. I was glad to find out that the wider shorter board was available. It looks cooler, with the mountains, too. It is comfortable and fun to use for hours at a time. Erik, the creator of Whirly Board, reached out personally when I wanted to swap out the original board for the wide board. He stands behind his product. I would highly recommend this for anyone looking for a solidly built balance board for working at a standing desk.

Completes my standing desk setup

With the work from home order in place and likely extending for another few months, I wanted to make the home office comfortable and started with a raising desk and then completed with the whirlyboard. I opted for the "standing desk" version which is a bit wider than the traditional whirlyboard as I figured it would be a bit more comfortable when standing at the desk for extended periods.I don't leave reviews quite often but wanted to for this as I absolutely love it. I feel it does a great job of keeping me energized throughout the day while also providing for a decent core workout. I've used it a few times during workouts as well and I feel it does a great job at working the secondary stabilizing muscles. I also love that it's Made in America!

For fidgety people with bad knees

The media could not be loaded.

This is the greatest thing I've purchased for WFH in a long time. I used a standing desk and these keeps me from sitting back on my heels.I love the playfulness of this as someone who used to longboard. It also feels great on my knees, I have runners knee in one and a repaired ACL in the other. It also works as a nice footrest when I am sitting down!!!Lastly, I fidget a lot. It's a great outlet for fidgeting and I get a bit of a workout. Keeps me alert while working.Very thankful for the creators of this board:)

Love it!

This thing is awesome. I’ve started training for future enduro motocross events where balance and core fitness is key. I’ve been using the Gaiam board for the past few weeks and while it’s okay - I’d feel a little bit of soreness the next day on my ankles, it wasn’t really aggressive enough to work up into the core. This thing is actually a challenge to keep balanced - looking forward to when I can keep it balanced without holding anything for more than 10 seconds. But with minor input from my hand on my mouse, I’m able to stay up but the adjustments are still happening in my core and legs. As I was a skateboarder in my youth, I’m looking forward to taking a few spins on it. Yah, this is really a unique and great product.

High quality

Im sure most people that buy this board for practicing skateboarding or wakeboarding but my story is different. I’m 62 years old and very active but unfortunately as we get older we lose some of our balance. I got this board so that I could practice my balance and strengthen my core, I use it every day for just about 10 minutes it really has improved my balance. I am an avid mountain biker and balance is important for me to continue doing sports. This board take some practice to get used to but I think anybody could master it with time. It’s really well made, extremely durable, I use my board on the carpet because it makes a little more stable than a hard surface, I love it!

I gave it a Whirl, and I LIKE IT

A lot of factors when into me choosing this for my desk.Primarily:- Asthetics: This board looks amazing and the cork patter is super cool and fits well with my office as you can see by the pictures- 360 degrees of motion: This has a round 1/2 ball under it plus a couple side balls for balancing.. the motion is constant and not just side to side, forward or back its any direction.. this is perfect- Good Quality Construction: If you ever have had a skateboard you know what kind of abuse this design can take. I have been using it for a couple weeks now and other than a bit of scuffing on the main ball from the carpet it is on it hardly shows I have been on it almost every day. As you can also see it is balanced! With nobody on the board it is very ballanced meaning you are only fighting yourself on the board. So far I literally have no complaints about this balance board!

Great product!

When using my standing desk normally, I would start to feel fatigued and end up leaning on my desk, which led to poor posture. The Whirlyboard has made it much easier for me to stand comfortably for a couple of hours at a time.It keeps your legs and feet active, so you do not fatigue as quickly as you would when standing completely still, which sounds a little odd, but it really works. I also had no issues typing while using it. I’m a software developer, so I type a lot, and I did not notice any negative impact.10/10 — I would definitely recommend it if you primarily work at a desk.

Great product!

I had been using another balance board at my standing desk for about a year but I was looking for something more challenging, that I could move & engage more. And I found it in the Whirlyboard! I also love that’s it’s American made. Great solid product! I’m looking forward to all the different things I can do with the Whirlyboard. Great value for the price in my opinion!

No Falls

The board feels stable under my feet. I don't have to worry about falling. I love that you can spin on it. I feel it's improved my balance. I like the ability to spin. Definitely makes it more fun than just rocking back and forth on your average balance board. I've bought a few and will be giving them out as Christmas gifts.

Core strengthening and physical agility training while working at my stand up desk!!

Product is well made. You can feel the passion in the quality MIA build. I went for the wider board so I’m not sure how the more traditional size skate deck compares. It’s an awesome way to build core strength while working at your stand up desk!

I'm already noticing a difference!

This board is a must if you work from home and have a standing desk! I'm already noticing a difference in my balance and core. It's also fun! It took some time to get used to, but I was balancing and even doing some turns after a few days. The board is high quality, durable, and well designed.

Not as fun as a roller balance board

I was looking for a balance board to use at work. This one wasn't as fun as the cylindrical roller. The whirlybird is solidly constructed but because it didn't have any rocking or rolling motion, it didn't work for me. This board is much more suited to someone who wants to pivot around (whirl around). That whirling motion wouldn't be appropriate in an office setting. Wrong purchase. Pivoting around would work your core a lot, admittedly.
